The Thursday Politics Thread IN: A Tale of Two Speeches

Politics FB

Mornin’ Politocadoes!

Americans were presented with speeches by two world leaders on their soil: one was naturally from the Commander-In-Chief US President Joe Biden and the other, current Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The reason for the speech, the tone, could not have been more different. President Biden’s rare speech from behind the resolute desk was solemn and dignified, attempting to better properly explain his exit from the race and his fears for the world. The other, was defensive and filled with raging bile. While both asked something of the American people, only one asked for hope and the belief in a better tomorrow for American democracy.

Biden’s speech laid out the reasons why, without naming Trump, it was so important to vote for the Democratic nominee. The President was solemn but also giving, in the accomplishments of his time in office. But he sternly warned of the creeping threat of authoritarianism from his former rival. He had hoped to better illuminate these reasons on the campaign trail with another win for democracy, and another repudiation of fascism. He finally got what people had been telling him. He alone could not fix it. But, maybe, just maybe there are others that could. The torch, as it has been before, has been passed to a new generation. He closed by emphatically praising his Vice President Kamala Harris for being “tough” and “capable”, asking the American people to put their faith in her.

Meanwhile! War Criminal and somehow still Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke before a joint session of the US Congress. This was his fourth time addressing Congress beating out other well-known Genocide Enjoyer and UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Netanyahu urged the US to continue to support Israel in their fight against Hamas. He lied at various times like Israel allowing in food trucks, or that Hamas is stealing food aid. He claimed that Pro Palestine demonstrators are useful idiots of Tehran, despite no evidence at all existing that Iran is, in any way, funding anti-Israel demonstrations. Netanyahu ridiculed the International Criminal Court prosecutor’s accusation that Israel targeted civilians. Regardless of whether there were confirmed reports of Hamas or not, of the 37,0000 airstrikes, civilians have been casualties in every one. Every time a humanitarian zone is created for civilians to be able to escape the bombing, more airstrikes and raids have continued in those zones. He boasted of the 135 captives that have been freed, but neglected to mention that the majority of the captives were freed during a cease-fire. Or how Israeli forces mistakenly killed 3 last December.

Netanyahu’s speech received multiple standing ovations from our Congress. His only true core constituency. Netanyahu remains deeply unpopular, especially in Israel, so it’s pretty disgusting to see our leaders debase themselves. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) chose to attend holding a sign that read “war criminal” and “guilty of genocide”. Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) chose not to attend and put out a statement voicing her opposition to Israel’s war.

And as he finished up, when the clapping had ended, the photos were finished being taken, the police pepper sprayed the seething mass of Pro-Palestine demonstrators just outside.

Netanyahu is supposed to meet separately with both Biden and Harris. His meeting with the President had been cancelled due to Covid, whereas Harris chose not to preside over the Senate during his speech.

Welcome to Thursday! Please be excellent to each other in the comments. The Mayor McSquirrel Rule remains in effect. Something to keep in mind! Police are using digital data to prosecute abortion seekers, and Facebook and Google are helping them! Even if they are not legally required to do so, the tech giants will aid them in this since it’s technically against the law. Please be careful when looking for abortion providers or helping someone who is looking for that assistance.
