Mario Moore (b. 1987) is a artist (and Detroit native) whose large-scale portraits, both single and group, are a compelling testament to the continuing vitality of the genre in whatever exponentially post-modern phase we’re into this week/month/year. I first became aware of his work at the Detroit Institute of Arts, both his relatively intimate portrayal of his grandmother, Queen Mother Helen Moore (2015), and his superb The Council (2020) (detail in the header image), a group picture evocative, among so much else, of so many Dutch masterpieces of collective portraiture.

Moore’s work is the subject of an exhibit at the Flint Institute of Arts that closes next week; I’d hoped to visit before now, but my illness, among other things, kept that from happening. If I don’t pull the trigger by tomorrow, I suspect I’ll end up missing out (and I’m leaning that way anyhow given the weather). That said, there’s another exhibit on Mexican prints there that I want to see which doesn’t start until May, and Moore’s exhibit will move to Grand Rapids until August, so maybe that’ll be the excuse I need to finally take the bus out there for a day or two (Grand Rapids is the next primary target on my “see more of Michigan” checklist).
