This week, bustin’ makes us feel good. It’s the 40th anniversary of Ghostbusters. And this week sees Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire in theaters.

Oldbusters

The franchise has had its up and downs, but somehow endures despite having some of cinema’s most cringey hot takes. It’s a source material that is loaded with sarcasm and irony, so it’s a little embarrassing that many take it so seriously. The balance between that 70’s SNL-style smart-aleck humor and urban fantasy is tricky to pull off, and it can be argued that it was pulled off successfully only once.

Perhaps it’s because the combination of ghost hunting and comedy is such a unique fit. Perhaps it’s because the cartoon and its toys looms large in our imaginations. (Frozen Empire supposedly takes a lot of inspiration from The Real Ghostbusters.)

But we all know why.

It’s the song.

Either that or it’s that one live action show with the gorilla.

Bonus prompt: when it comes to movies with the best ghosts, who ya gonna call?
