The Weekly Music Discussion Thread Loves the Sound of Breaking Glass

Let’s discuss any and all music here. You’ve got a new artist who’s rocking your boat that you want to talk about? Post a video! Found out about that unearthed Coltrane album that has the jazz freak in you losing your mind? Lay it out for us! Do you have a theory about what your favorite band might do for their next album? Let’s hear it! Anything and everything music-related goes here.

Among music geeks those who engage in or discuss music obsessively or with great attention to detail, there are a lot of completists: those who, after discovering an artist that they like, will attempt to collect or at least hear every other thing that that artist has ever released. I’m sure most of us have done this with at least a few artists, and for some among us this may very well be routine.

But have you ever discovered an album by a new (to you) artist, liked it…and then, for whatever reason, not really explored their work any further? Looking through my music library, there are a number of times that I’ve bought an album and really enjoyed it, but never got around to checking out subsequent releases by that artist – or, in the case of well-established artists, never dug any deeper into their (sometimes vast) back catalogues.

Granted, this tended to happen more often in the days before practically everything became available via streaming, as it generally took more time, effort, and (most crucially) money to keep up with new releases or delve deeper into an artist’s back catalogue. Nowadays it’s easier to fill in those gaps, but back when hearing an album meant dropping $20 on average for a new CD, there are times where I waited years for certain albums to get marked down or turn up second hand (and then sometimes it just never happened – or, if it eventually did, by then I’d long since moved on to the next thing).

This topic came to mind a couple months ago when I put on Jesus of Cool by Nick Lowe. I’ve owned that album for over a decade and absolutely love it, but for some reason I’d never gotten around to checking out any of his other albums. So at long last, I tracked down a copy of Labour of Lust, and hopefully will have finally heard it by the time this discussion gets posted. Also open to any other album recommendations from anyone more familiar with Lowe’s discography.

So, I invite you today to share an artist or two represented in your music libraries by a single album that you really like – and for those of you more familiar with that artist’s discography, feel free to reply with some recommendations!

So have fun, and as always, rock out with yr guac out!
