Sports Corner – May 1, 2019

“Havlicek stole the ball!”  It was one of the most famous radio calls of the 60s, possibly the NBA’s version of “the Giants win the pennant.”  It was the 1965 Eastern Conference finals, with the 76ers down by one and with Hal Greer inbounding the ball with a chance to set up a winning shot.  Greer tried to get the ball to Chet Walker, but John “Hondo” Havlicek read the play perfectly, took the rock, and sealed the win.  Celtics radio man Johnny Most exultantly declared “Havlicek stole the ball!” The Celts would go on to win the seventh of their eight consecutive titles, Most would become a Boston radio legend, and Hondo would find his way to the Hall of Fame.  Havlicek passed away last week at the age of 79. RIP.

As always, all sports chat welcome.  But use discretion if you want to discuss Tyrek Hill. That story is awful.
