- Hostiles
- The Greatest Showman
- The Post
I had an extremely rough day yesterday, which is why you didn’t get Box Office then, and WordPress is being wonky today, but fuck it, movies happened, let’s do this.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure had the honor of finally unseating Jumanji this week. The third in the dystopian teen parable series, it comes out three years after Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials and well past peak hotness for Hunger Games-style stories. But who knows, maybe this is the dawning of a second golden age for teen anxiety. Generation Z, if you’re reading this, things aren’t quite as bad as they look out here.
This weekend’s second-highest opener, at #10, is Padmaavat, a historical drama that has been extremely controversial in its native India. It was initially blocked in four Indian states before the ban was repealed by the supreme court.
Hostiles, the story of Christian Bale and his antiheroic facial hair, shot from 23rd to third this weekend, which goes to show what adding 2,700 theaters will do for you. The Greatest Showman, last week’s #5, bounced back to fourth again after 12 Strong and Den of Thieves both posted drops in the neighborhood of 45%.
The Shape of Water (#8) and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (#11) both rose on expanded rollouts – as did Justice League (#27), which for some reason added 93 theaters in its 11th weekend and more than doubled its take from week 10. (Blade Runner 2049 is still kicking around in 43rd place, which is kind of remarkable for a movie that’s now out on Blu-ray.)
