- The United States won their fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup with a team full of WNBA stars, beating France in the final. USA didn’t have it all their own way, with tough games against Italy and Spain, but put together a monster second half in the final to take it home. Host country Germany won the bronze medal with the support of emerging star Iyana Martin.
- Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka to win the US Open women’s singles title in a three-set match. This is Rybakina’s third Grand Slam title and second this year, making her the top player on tour at the moment, while Sabalenka’s poor run of form in finals continues. Taylor Townsend and Katerina Siniakova won the women’s doubles, completing their career slam, while Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski won the men’s doubles competition. And, yep, I think that’s all the winners we need to talk about!
- South Africa won the self-proclaimed “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry” series over New Zealand 3-1, sealing the series win with a match held in Baltimore. The series win cements that they are a significant favourite to win the Men’s Rugby World Cup next year. Sadly, we did not get to see the situation where the series finished 2-2 and the trophy was split in half.
- Enric Mas (which probably means “Enric More”) won the 2026 edition of the Vuelta a Espana. This is the first Spaniard to win the race in 12 years, and the biggest win of Mas’s career.
- It was an eventful Saturday in college football, with most of the major out-of-conference games taking place. In the headliner, #4 Texas came back from 20-3 down to beat #1 Ohio State. Oklahoma State scored one of the biggest upsets of the year by beating #2 ranked Oregon at home, snapping a 12-game losing streak, while Michigan upset #11 Oklahoma.
- The Orlando Pride signed a contract extension with star forward Barbra Banda through the 2029 season. The deal with the Zambian international is reportedly one of the NWSL’s biggest contract, using the league’s new High Impact Player mechanism, and is another victory in the US competition’s efforts to stop top players from going to European teams.
