It’s weird that in the 1970s two Swedish men wrote a pop song about two Mexican men reminiscing about fighting in the Revolution in the 1910s and it’s sung by two Swedish women, right?
I mean, I’m not mad at it. It’s a pretty great song.
Just, like, it’s interesting that that’s a thing that happened.
Anyhoo, here’s “Fernando” by ABBA.
Fun “I read the Wikipedia article” bonus facts: The original Swedish version of the song was sung by ABBA member Anni-Frid Lyngstad on her solo album in 1975. The Swedish lyrics were quite different, with the singer comforting their bro Fernando through a heartbreak. But Bjorn Ulvaeus found these original lyrics too “banal,” so he did the next logical thing and made them about the Mexican Revolution instead. The English version was put out by ABBA in 1976.
Happy Night Threading!
