Public Domain Theater: And Then There Were None (& “Mysterious Mose”)

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

We got a real treat for you this time! It’s the 1945 adaptation of perhaps the most famous mystery-thriller to come from the pen of Agatha Christie: it’s And Then There Were None.

Ten strangers are summoned to a remote island by an unseen host. When they start dying, one by one, they come to the conclusion that one of them is a murderer – and so the game begins. They must work together, solve the mystery, and get the killer before the killer gets them, all without knowing who among them can be trusted.

As the bodies pile up and the survivors dwindle, the tension grows increasingly taught, creating one of the most memorable suspense stories out there. If you haven’t yet experienced it … well, first off, read the book … but then, give this film a gander!

Our opening cartoon keeps to the eerie mystery theme set by our feature presentation. It’s the Fleischer Studios short “Mysterious Mose”, starring an early version of Betty Boop and Bimbo. A mixture of groovy music, creepy imagery, and totally zany, anything-goes animation, it’s a delightfully oddball little gem, well worth your time!

What mysteries lurk within the depths of the public domain? Sit down for Public Domain Theater and find out!
