One of my favorite musicals of all time, Hadestown is stage musical that is a retelling of the Orpheus-Eurydice and the Hades-Persephone myths.
Set during the backdrop of the Great Depression, the musical takes the doomed lovers trying to reunite where the Underworld is now an industrial town.
With a score that mixes folk music and New Orleans Jazz, Hadestown uses the two Greek myths to tell the theme of “No matter how sad the story is, people will keep telling it again and again for many generations”. And it’s important where storytelling is central to the musical.
