The Feb. 24 Day Thread of Marjorie Main

Actor Marjorie Main was born on this day in 1890. She achieved success on the stage in the 1930s, appearing on Broadway in Dead End and The Women, and she recreated those roles in the subsequent film versions. In 1947 she was nominated for a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Ma Kettle in The Egg and I. The character was so popular that Main and her costar Percy Kilbride went on to star in seven Ma and Pa Kettle movies. Usually cast as roughhewn and brash characters, Main was described as softspoken and dignified in real life. After a long and successful career Marjorie Main retired from acting in 1958. She passed away from lung cancer in 1975 at the age of 85.
