Here are today’s Second Chance contestants:
- Michelle Tsai, a tutor originally from Honolulu, Hawaii;
- Molly Murray, an English professor from New York City; and
- Bob Callen, a retired librarian from Lexington, Kentucky.
Jeopardy!
PLACE NAMES // YOUNG ADULT NOVELS // CHRISTMAS ENTERTAINMENT // A PROVERBIAL MESS // “C.B.” // WHAT’S YOUR HANDLE?
DD1 – 800 – “C.B.” – When you analyze information in a manner that tends to bolster your preexisting beliefs, it’s called this (Michelle doubled to 3,600.)
Scores at first break: Bob 1,000, Molly 1,600, Michelle 7,200.
Scores entering DJ: Bob 2,200, Molly 2,800, Michelle 10,400.
Double Jeopardy!
THE ’20s // RESTAR-AUTEURS // HITTING YOU WITH HARD SCIENCE // 4-SYLLABLE WORDS // TOONS IN TUNES // LADY & THE STAMP
DD2 – 1,200 – HITTING YOU WITH HARD SCIENCE – Latin for “hair” gives us the name of these blood vessels (Michelle improved by 4,000 to 12,000 vs. 2,800 for Molly.)
DD3 – 800 – LADY & THE STAMP – The “Columbian Exposition” series features the first U.S. commemorative postage stamps, including 7 stamps that feature her (Michelle dropped 6,000 from her score of 22,400 vs. 10,800 for Molly.)
Michelle controlled the action and tried to put the game away on DD3 but missed, so the game stayed alive into FJ with Michelle at 22,800 vs. Molly at 13,200. Finishing in the red was Bob with -1,800.
Final Jeopardy!
AUTHORS – Before his sudden death in 2004, this journalist & author was researching the unsolved assassination of PM Olof Palme
Both players were correct on FJ, with Michelle adding 3,601 to advance with 26,401.
Final scores: Bob -1,800, Molly 26,400, Michelle 26,401.
Wagering strategy: When Michelle found DD3, she had a narrow runaway with mostly low-value clues remaining. This late in the round, it certainly would have been an option to wager very little and expect to outfinish Molly on the remaining clues rather than gamble on the DD. This was a much different situation than yesterday, in which Jasmine bet big on a DD early in a close game trying to establish clear command.
Judging the writers: They should have saved that “restore the proverb” category for the celebrity version.
Correct Qs: DD1 – What is confirmation bias? DD2 – What is capillaries? DD3 – Who was Queen Isabella? FJ – Who was Stieg Larsson?
