Public Domain Theater: The Little Shop of Horrors (& “Skeleton Dance”)

The classic Roger Corman horror/comedy (and basis for the Alan Menken horror/comedy/musical) plus a spooktacular cartoon from Disney's Silly Symphonies.

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

♪It’s the spook – spookiest season of alllllll!♪

Yes, another October is upon us, beginning the countdown to Halloween, the day we celebrate all things dark and eerie. Our film selections this go around are no exception to that, as we’re pleased to present The Little Shop of Horrors.

Directed by Roger Corman, this horror/comedy is best known today for its musical adaptation (and more specifically, Steve Martin singing about the sadistic joys of being a dentist). But the original still has plenty of macabre chuckles to offer, as nebbish loser Seymour discovers the key to fortune (and their hot co-worker’s heart) is a prize plant that will only bloom when fed with human blood. Mayhem and hilarity naturally ensue.

Our opening cartoon is no less amusing and no less spooky: it’s Disney’s celebrated short “The Skeleton Dance”. First entry in the landmark Silly Symphony series, it’s a gay ol’ romp at a graveyard as bats and black cats and walking skeletons jitterbug all through the night.

So don your witches’ caps, get your cauldron bubbling, and enjoy a good fright with these dark little gems from the public domain!
