This week’s discussion topic: Conspiracy theories. So much of history and political discussion are driven by conspiracy theories, from the relatively benign (the government is hiding the existence of Bigfoot) to the extremely dangerous (take your pick of antisemitism tropes and canards). It’s far too easy for people to fall into thinking that there’s a Grand Design that explains all events, especially catastrophic disasters, or that some combination of Those People are out to get you. What are some conspiracy theories that particularly annoy or offend you? Are there any that you believe, or at least are willing to give a respectful hearing?
I recognize this can be a fraught topic from a variety of angles, even down to defining what a conspiracy theory is. Please try to be tolerant of other viewpoints. But also be careful not to share anything overtly offensive.
