Obscure media time! I watched a retrospective about the Banana Splits today. I was never a fan of the show (the Sid and Marty Kroft costumes creeped me out) but the band’s discography is surprisingly good if you’re a fan of sixties pop. There’s a reason acts like Liz Phair and They Might Be Giants have covered their songs over the years. While watching that retrospective, I discovered something glorious – a faux documentary about the band that aired on Cartoon Network UK.

Matthew Sweet and MTV host Jon Stewart? The lost band member, Blubble? Revealing “I’m Gonna Find A Cave” was a Vietnam War protest song? This is a slice of nineties perfection. It reminds me a lot of the “Behind The Laughter” episode of The Simpsons, except in this case The Simpsons didn’t do it first.

The Matthew Sweet and Jon Stewart interview clips would be reused in the Space Ghost Coast to Coast episodes “Urges” and “Mayonnaise”, respectively. “Urges” was co-written by some dude named Joel Hodgson.

Have fun posting!
