Those of you who’d like to post future Creative Endeavors Threads post your request in the comments below. Hey, Kevzero here, I’m an amateur photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I mostly take wildlife photos, but have been recently taking pictures of many other things. This week: Cicadas! For the last couple of months Cape Cod, like the most of the Northeastern US has been inundated with the 17-year Cicadas. After they are born, these relatively large insects lay doormat underground for 17 years while they mature. They spend 99% of their lives in this state. Then after the 17 years they emerge en masse to start the breeding process all over again over the course of a few months. The males make a loud high pitched noise with their wings and abdomens to attract females. The collective sound of the males can reach up to 100 decibels and can be heard for miles. When the breeding is done virtually all of the adults will die withing days, but the offspring, buried deep in the ground, will mature over the course of 17 years and emerge once again when the time comes. The cycle of the 17-year Cicada for 2025 is almost over as of this writing, but there are traces still lingering in the area. Here are a few pictures I’ve taken over the last month or so
