The Avocado Movie Club #21: George Washington (2000)

Welcome to the Movie Club! This week’s movie is David Gordon Green’s directorial debut, George Washington!

George Washington stars Donald Holden as George, the titular character, a young boy in a poor rural town, whose skull never fully hardened. The movie follows him and his friends over the course of an unforgettable summer as they learn about loss for the first time and struggle to be something more than what they feel confined to.

 

George Washington was first screened at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb 10 and then again at various festivals throughout 2000 before being given a limited release in the US on October 27, 2000.1 It was critically acclaimed, earning an 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, and was a minor box office success as it made $342,722 against a very modest budget of $42,000.234
