ANNOUNCEMENT: In celebration of Black History Month, The Avocado’s very own Headphone Princess will be hosting Some ABCs of Black American Music! For twenty-six days, we will be working our way through the alphabet with our resident clam-wrangler, who will be posting about “Black musicians, albums, record labels, songs, that are in a lot of ways unconcerned with performance. Almost a sort of push against respectability politics, a ‘I am what I am’. It’s interesting to think about how the stakes of creating music that is uncompromising varied for many of these artists depending on the time and circumstances in which they worked. Some things changed- others did not.”
A different song accompanied by a thoughtful write-up will be posted in the comment section of the linked article every day around 6:00 PM CST. If it’s anything like the previous threads that Headphone Princess has posted, there is bound to be a treasure trove of great music to be heard, and almost certain to be something you’ll like, something you haven’t heard before, or even something that might change your life.
