Space Police 2 Day Thread (June 25th)

The third of the early-90s Lego Space factions arrived in 1992 to smooth out relations between the M-Trons and the Blacktrons – with extreme prejudice if necessary. That’s right, the Space Police are back!

The name of 6897 “Rebel Hunter” makes it clear that the Space Police are the oppressive Space Tool of the Space State.

Of all the original cycle of Classic Space style themes, Space Police 2 might have the worst aesthetic. Their transparent green windscreens and red and white highlights unintentionally evoke Christmas, and they plastered their ugly-looking logo everywhere. Even in space, cops have no taste.

See lower left for Lego giving up on pretending those bullhorn pieces aren’t guns. That Blacktron guy is about to get got.

Space Police lasted until 1993. In many ways it marks the endpoint of the broader Classic Space Era that had started 15 years before, with its generic smiley-faced astronauts, vague lore, and haphazard designs. The next theme to come out, while still technically “in canon” with SP2 and Blacktron Future Generation, would change a lot about Lego Space’s overall approach. It was something cooler than the stodgy old Space Police – much, much cooler.
