A Time and a Place for the Weekly Music Thread

Let’s discuss any and all music here. You’ve got a new artist who’s rocking your boat that you want to talk about? Post a video! Found out about that unearthed Coltrane album that has the jazz freak in you losing your mind? Lay it out for us! Do you have a theory about what your favorite band might do for their next album? Let’s hear it! Anything and everything music-related goes here.

Earlier in the week I was driving around listening to the soundtrack to the motion picture Snatch (the film directed by Guy Ritchie, not any number of other films that presumably exist with that title). Killer soundtrack (and a fun movie, too) but whenever I listen to it, I always skip “Angel” by Massive Attack. Now don’t get me wrong – I love Massive Attack, and “Angel” is one of my favorite Massive Attack songs. The song was also put to great use in the film (WARNING: Massive spoilers in the link) but as far as listening to the song is concerned, for me it clearly belongs at the beginning of Mezzanine, which is an album best enjoyed at night – preferably on headphones, laying in a dark room while contemplating the infinite…

On the other hand, I fell in love with Urge Overkill’s cover of “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” hearing it used in the context of Pulp Fiction. I was already an Urge Overkill fan at that point (their excellent contribution to the 1993 Red Hot compilation No Alternative led to me getting Saturation as an 8-for-a-penny CD on one of my Columbia House memberships, and then proceeding to try and turn everyone I knew onto them). But when I finally tracked down a used copy of the Stull EP a year or two after getting the Pulp Fiction soundtrack (as well as a VHS copy of the movie, which I watched at least a dozen times before the end of high school) I listened to “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” in its original context as the opening number of the EP once, and pretty much every time after that have skipped it and started with track 2 instead.

Which leads to this week’s discussion prompt: What songs do you like, but prefer to listen to in a specific context? What songs do you only like to hear at a certain time, in a certain place, or in a certain frame of mind? Where do those songs work best for you?

Of course, any and all music-related topics are welcome. Have fun, and rock out with yr guac out!
