Today’s contestants are:
– Shari, a high school English teacher from Massachusetts, enjoys cooking with her two-year-old;
– Eric, a retired OB-GYN from California, is mistaken for and more buff than Chuck Norris; and
– Jason, a math teacher from New Mexico, is fastest to “lose” a game of anti-chess. Jason is a four-day champ with winnings of $105,300.
Eric was correct on DD2 while Jason missed DD3, making it a close contest going into FJ with Jason at $14,400, Eric with $12,000 and Shari at $6,000.
DD1, $800 – TV SPINOFFS – “Torchwood” was a spinoff of this British series; the titles of the two shows are anagrams of each other (Jason won the table limit of $1,000.)
DD2, $1,200 – SECRETARIES OF WAR – In early 1801 Sec. of War Samuel Dexter found himself acting as Sec. of Treasury & State for the last weeks of this President’s term (Eric won $4,000 from his score of $4,400 and moved into second place.)
DD3, $800 – GATES – The name of this ancient city, home to the Ishtar Gate, means “gate of the gods” (Jason lost $4,000 of his leading score of $15,200 vs. $8,000 for Eric.)
FJ – 1970s ALBUM REVIEWS – Rolling Stone said this 1976 album had “the best and worst tendencies of L.A.-situated rock” & was an “unflattering portrait of the milieu”
Everyone missed FJ. and when Eric made the wagering error of betting everything, Jason took the victory, dropping $10,000 to win with $4,400 for a five-day total of $109,700.
Since he apparently liked the category, a better move for Eric would have been a wager of less than $6,000, which would have forced one of his opponents to be correct to beat him. Had Eric not liked the category, the best play would have been a $0 wager for a possible tiebreaker if Jason had missed and Shari had been correct, or a win when both opponents missed.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the 2019 movie female superhero who punched an elderly woman on a train is Captain Marvel.
Most overpriced clue: $2,000 for the path to destruction also being known as the road to this (ruin).
Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is “Doctor Who”?
DD2 – Who was John Adams?
DD3 – What is Babylon?
FJ – What is “Hotel California”?
