Jeopardy! recap for Wed., May 15 – The third and final game of round two of the 2019 Teachers Tournament featured:
– Matthew, middle school civics from Florida, who says “history doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes”;
– Dave, high school art from Wyoming, does a fun daily warm-up with students; and
– Conor, high school world history from New York, teaches at a new school.
In a close three-way affair, Dave got two DDs and came out on top into FJ with $15,200 vs. $12,500 for Conor and $9,600 for Matthew.
DD1, $1,000 – AS DESCRIBED IN THE PATENT – 1893: “Automatically engaging or disengaging an entire series of clasps by a single continuous movement” (Dave had $200 to wager and said “all in”, which to my understanding means a $200 bet, but he was awarded the table maximum of $1,000.)
DD2, $1,600 – CLASSIC FOREIGN FILMS – In Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal”, a disillusioned knight plays a game of chess with this opponent (Dave won $3,600 on a true DD.)
DD3, $1,200 – ANCIENT BATTLES – Horses were terrified of these war beasts, which routed Roman cavalry at the 280 B.C. battle of Heraclea (Conor won $3,500 from his score of $7,800 to take the lead.)
FJ – RUSSIAN COMPOSERS – A 1913 piece by him was conceived of as the symphonic equivalent of a pagan ritual, to be titled “great sacrifice”
Only Conor was correct, adding $6,701 to advance with $19,201. He will face Sara and Francois in the two-day final.
Triple Stumper of the day: No one knew the Hong Kong director of the 1989 foreign film thriller “The Killer” is John Woo.
See me after class dept.: The teachers will probably take a ribbing when they get back to school for flopping in a math category, only going one-for-five.
This day in shilling: Alexa dimmed the lights for FJ, so she’s perfect for creating a dramatic atmosphere for the game show you host in your house.
Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is a zipper?
DD2 – Who is the Grim Reaper (Death)?
DD3 – What are elephants?
FJ – Who was Stravinsky?
