Happy Grizzly Bears day!
Have some Grizzly Bears facts!
- First printed in Alpha, Grizzly Bears is a vanilla 2/2 for 2 mana. In time, mostly due to Grizzly Bears, the term Bear would become slang for any such 2/2 for 2.
- Grizzly Bears are an example of how early Magic creatures would be named in plural. This happens less often in modern Magic because it’s both confusing in conversation and because it makes individual bears seem less powerful.
- For this reason and others, Grizzly Bears would eventually be replaced by Runeclaw Bear, which is some kind of magic bear or something.
- The flavor text of the original Grizzly Bears refers to “Dominia.” Not to be confused with “Dominaria,” the central plane to much of Magic’s early story, Dominia is the multiverse of the Magic cosmology. No one has ever been confused by this.
There are 20 Bears in Magic (not counting tokens, Changelings, Mistform Ultimus, etc.). Of these:
- 18 are green (there’s one blue Bear Illusion and one white Bear Spirit)
- 11 are 2/2
- 8 cost 2 mana
- 7 have no ability text
- 3 have only keyword abilities
- 1 is Legendary
Now get posting, Day Threaders, and don’t forget your booties because it’s cooooold out there today!
