Last week I hung out on Dauphin Island, a barrier island off the coast of Alabama. Dauphin Island is a “globally important” destination for migrating birds, and the Audubon Society recognizes 420 species of birds that nest or at least rest on the island. A lot of these birds have names that sound like Southern euphemisms for odd or suspicious strangers (read: Yankees). Here are some of my favorites.
Hudsonian Godwit
Yellow-bellied Flycatcher
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Chuck-Will’s-Widow
Dark-eyed Junco
Boat-tailed Grackle
and of course there’s a Creeper.
Have a great night, everyone!
