Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 30

Jeopardy! recap for Tue., Jan. 30 – Please welcome today’s contestants:

– Brandey, an improv actor and library worker from Lee’s Summit, MO, who has a “J” in her fingernail polish and approves of her children’s names;
– Emily, a merchandise planner from San Diego, CA, who drives fast in the same location; and
– Ryan, a banker from SeaTac, WA, who found a dog on a pyramid and left it there. Ryan is a one-day champ with winnings of $20,999.

As in the previous game, some bad guessing put Ryan behind early, but again he was very impressive in DJ, improving from $2,600 after round one to a $27,000 runaway going into FJ. Battling for second money were Brandey with $8,600 and Emily at $4,600.

DD1 – AIR FORCE BASE – Since the 1950s the USAF and this air force have shared a base at Mildenhall at Suffolk (Ryan, who did an impression of the Daily Double sound effect along with the real thing, won $1,000)

DD2 – HISTORY – A 20-kiloton A-bomb was dropped on this atoll in a 1946 test, the first in peacetime (Ryan won $4,000)

DD3 – EVERY YEAR – In France this annual religious observance is known as “Mercredi des Cendres” (Brandey won $3,000)

FJ – LITERATURE & MYTHOLOGY – The “very name embodies the idea of flight”, says one analysis of a 20th century novel in describing this main character

Only Brandey was correct on FJ, so it was a good thing for Ryan that he couldn’t be caught. He dropped $6,000 to win with $21,000 and a two-day total of $41,999.

Triple Stumpers of the day: The players didn’t know that the shadowy action before “my door” in Tom Petty’s “Don’t Come Around Here No More” is “darken”, or the baseball place on the Alleghany from 1970-2000 that begins with “Th” was Three Rivers Stadium.

This day in Trebekistan: Alex’s call to a higher power was answered, as play improved after he prayed following a triple-miss on the game’s first clue.

Correct Qs:

DD1 – Who is the Royal Air Force?
DD2 – What is Bikini Atoll?
DD3 – What is Ash Wednesday?
FJ – Who is Daedalus?
