Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Jan. 19 – Today’s contestants are:
– Sarah, an attorney from Lakewood, CO, who was an Irish step dancer and has achy joints as a result;
– Rachel, a fire lookout from Bend, OR, who spends 4 days on the job in a two-story tower; and
– Lee, a teacher from Raleigh, NC, who leads a course in theory of knowledge. Lee is a two-day champ with $42,800.
This was a very close battle between Lee and Rachel, with first place going down to the very last clue on which Lee should have taken a guess. But he didn’t and Rachel held a slight margin going into FJ with $14,800 vs. $13,300 for Lee and $6,400 for Sarah.
DD1 – STATES BY LAKES – Lake Cadillac, Lac Vieux Desert (Lee won $1,100)
DD2 – 19TH CENTURY OCCUPATIONS – This person didn’t drive trucks but rather horses or oxen hauling cargo (Rachel lost $2,000)
DD3 – SERIAL KILLERS – Mistah Kurtz – he dead; in the April 1899 issue of Blackwood’s Magazine thanks to this author (Rachel won $2,000)
FJ – WORLD CAPITALS – It’s the only world capital whose name is derived from an Algonquin word
Everyone was correct on FJ and Lee had two preferred wagering stratgies available to him: bet less than $500 to protect himself from Sarah and hope that Rachel would miss; or, bet it all and hope for a big payday if Rachel missed or didn’t wager enough.
Instead, Lee wagered $10,300, improving him to $23,600, which left him a little short as Rachel bet $10,000, not enough to cover double of Lee’s score but good enough to win with $24,800.
Triple Stumpers of the day: A surprising number to choose from, including clues about a double-named drum being a “tom-tom”; the city in the LIBOR interest rate as London; an “old” Dickens novel, “The Old Curiosity Shop”; and a seller of writing essentials being a stationer.
Correct Qs:
DD1 – What is Michigan?
DD2 – What is a teamster?
DD3 – Who was Conrad?
FJ – What is Ottawa?
