The Creative Endeavors Thread Looks Back and Forth

This is the space for our members to discuss and share their creative projects, ranging from written works to drawings, photography, and even craft projects such as knitting and woodworking. Self promotion is welcome and certainly encouraged (websites where we can view and/or purchase your work). Please continue to preface if content is NSFW and properly spoiler/link such content. Those of you who’d like to post future Creative Endeavors Threads post your request in the comments below.

My first official shift at the new job starts in a few hours. Excited and nervous (if happy about the fact that I am excited to do something even marginally different for work for the first time since before the pandemic), but pleased all through that the sea change seems to have broken up my recent creative logjam, as it feels like I’ve made far more headway on most of my projects in the last couple of weeks than in the past several months. Much of this is inkwork (knocking down several “legacy” ideas that have lain dormant for months if not years) but I’m also getting a fair amount of painting done (I should, at this rate, have a comfortable stock of decent work to show for the year) and even a few prints (working on a design to finish by New Year’s Eve and did a pattern test as well as a few old ones).

Puzzling over how my old job played out career-wise (or, to be more accurate, did and then didn’t) has gotten me thinking about the creative side and how it’ll likely transpire for the rest of the decade. In slightly related news, the University of Michigan’s art museum just reopened its original building after most of a year under renovation and showcased a bunch of recent work from student artists and others that got me really inspired to try new stuff over the winter (once again my general lack of success with colored pencils annoys). The excitement’s helping to paper over a bittersweet (and hopefully temporary) farewell to my biweekly figure sketch nights and the monthly drink-and-draw (both of which really popped two weeks back, and I don’t just think it was the rush of incipent nostalgia).

The header this week’s a sketch from local hotspot Bill’s Beer Garden in Ann Arbor (digitally altered with Paint 3D; something new-ish I’m trying), which opens three seasons out of the year for local graduate departments to gather and discover whose study abroad experience and/or internship the previous semester was more meaningful (I kid—mostly—it’s adorable, really). Already working to deal with the potential transformation of my social life just as Bill’s will soon shutter for the general windy miasma and probable snows of a Michigan winter.
