News and Results
* The inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League concluded with the Los Angeles Queens defeating the San Francisco Firebells in a 3-2 series. Unusually for the very offense-tilted league, the final game ended just 2-0, with Ayami Sato pitching a Complete Game Shutout. Little League legend Mo’ne Davis also made big contributions for the Queens in centre field. The WBPL is pretty small-time and faces a lot of challenges even compared to other womens’ leagues in their first seasons, but if nothing else it’s shown that there’s an audience for women’s baseball and some fun talent.
* In other baseball news, the Detroit Tigers announced that their stadium will now be known as Fifth Third Park, after an area bank. It’s not a great name, but between that and (no longer Guaranteed) Rate Field, the AL Central is cooking up one hell of an algebra problem.
* The NFL quarterback injury epidemic continued on Monday night, as the New York Giants’ Jaxson Dart left the game with MCL damage. Dart will have season-ending knee surgery, ending a brief glimmer of hope for New York football. On the positive side, it appears that the injury to Bears quarterback Caleb Williams is less severe than initially feared, although he may still miss next week’s Monday Night Football game against the Eagles.
