The Avocado Movie Club #53: Nirvanna The Band The Show The Movie (2025) 

Welcome to the Movie Club! Today’s movie is Matt Johnson’s comedy Nirvanna the Band The Show The Movie!.

Nirvanna the Band The Show The Movie follows fictional versions of Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol, members of a band called Nirvanna the Band, who are constantly making plans to try and get a slot at a local bar called The Rivoli. After being inspired by Back to the Future, Matt modifies their RV and accidentally turns it into a time machine, getting them stuck back in 2008.

Nirvanna the Band The Show The Movie is a loose continuation of both a web and Viceland series of the same name. It premiered at SXSW on March 9, 2025, followed by both limited and wider releases worldwide later in the year.¹ It was produced on a small budget of $2 million and managed to make $5 million in the box office, and was a massive success with critics, earning a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.²³ 

Trivia:⁴ 

• The film is very cleverly composed, using older archival footage from the show, previous media events, and guerilla footage with real people. 
• Everything with Matt and Jay walking around the top of the CN Tower is not faked, although Matt is hesitant to give too many details in fear of getting in trouble. They actually expected to get kicked out and would work that into the plot but it ended up working.
• The Canadian Tire employee who they talk to about the wire cutters was later invited to the film’s premiere at TIFF.
