In which Hayley and Klaus chase Eu-Fear-ia…
Welcome to American Dad’s favorite holiday Halloween… Wait. In May… Wait. Ok, so the scheduling of this may have thrown off things a bit. On the other hand, American Dad! never shied away from the offbeast episode at any time. And these days horror movies aren’t just limited to October releases. Either way, we’ve got a new episode with a rare Hayley/Klaus pairing (I think the last time they had a focus episode was where Hayley became a fish to marry Klaus to get a green card).
The family is gathered around waiting for dinner but it’s ruined because it’s hard to make lasagna (we’ll see them in the b-plot). But Hayley is waiting for a friend and when Klaus finds out it’s Danuta he worms his way in (although he is not curious if Danuta eats this time). The trio are burning letters and Danuta decides to tell a scary story. The story ends up scaring them so much that Danuta thinks she killed them. Instead, Klaus and Hayley discover Eu-fear-ia, a high from scares where they see a grim reaper shredding on a sick guitar. This harkens back to a similar plot where Stan likes to die but this seems less dangerous
Klaus and Hayley then try to do everything to experience the same high again, coming up short until they visit Roger’s curio shop (a callback to Witches of Langley). There Hayley discovers a haunted well attraction where you have to yell into the well and it will take your soul if it echoes back. The duo make their way to the well. Hayley yells into the well but Klaus chickens out. Klaus gets to experience the high but wakes up Hayley has disappeared. Klaus runs back to the house and tries to go to sleep in Stan’s bed.
He’s visited by shapeshifter Hayley and taken back to the well where he is forced to yell into the well. But it’s revealed Hayley is alright. She was originally going to just throw Klaus into the well as revenge but then decided to give him one more Eu-fear-ia. Everything works out for the duo.
Over in the B-plot, the rest of the Smiths try to take a cooking class from a Suze Orman knockoff, Cricket Lemone (which could have been a Roger persona). She promises quick 15 minute meals, despite never actually showing them how to cook. The family continually screws up meal making until Stan’s chili that he tries to get Hayley to try. A bit of a weak plot simply used to sideline the family and set up the final intersecting bit at the end.
Stray Observations
- Roger’s curiosity shop was downsized since we last saw it.
- Paige however, is Roger’s favorite employee.
- Danuta knew just where to go to escape extradition
- Jeff seemed unbothered his wife turned into a shapeshifter
Final Thoughts: Solid episode that’s more interesting than genuinely funny. The cutaways to the reaper were pretty fun.
