Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Feb. 27

Here are today’s contestants:

– Tim Leung, a technical trainer from Fitchburg, Wisconsin;
– Diana Miller, an attorney from Richmond, Virginia; and
– James Hirsh, a lawyer from Toronto, Ontario. James is a three-day champ with winnings of $67,418.

Jeopardy!

WHAT’S YOUR SIGN? // LET’S “P”LAY // THE LAW OF THE LAND // NUMERICAL TERMS // IN THE STATE CAPITAL // TV OFFSPRING

DD1 – 800 – IN THE STATE CAPITAL – Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (Diana moved into first, improving by $2,000 to $5,000.)

Scores at first break: James $4,200, Diana $5,000, Tim $1,800.

Scores entering DJ: James $6,200, Diana $6,200, Tim $3,000.

Double Jeopardy!

PSYCH 101 // QUICK HITS // HOOKED ON MNEMONICS // AMERICAN ART & ARTISTS // HISTORIC TRIALS // DIRTY WORDS

DD2 – 1,200 – DIRTY WORDS – This word once meant a filthy hotel, but can also refer to a person or, more recently, to an Emmy-winning series (Diana dropped $2,600 to $4,800 vs. $6,200 for James.)

DD3 – 2,000 – AMERICAN ART & ARTISTS – This Brooklyn-born artist with an all-too-short career first attracted attention for his graffiti, done under the name SAMO© (James added $3,000 up to $15,200 vs. $9,200 for Diana.)

James was correct on his DD opportunity in DJ while Diana missed hers, which made the difference in James leading into FJ at $16,400 vs. $11,600 for Diana and $9,800 for Tim.

Final Jeopardy!

COMPANIES – Historian Louis Hyman wrote this company’s sales method undid the power of the “consumerism of Jim Crow”

Only Diana was correct on FJ, adding $4,799 to win with $16,399.

Final scores: James $9,582, Diana $16,399, Tim $9,800.

Wagering strategy: Diana didn’t bet enough to cover a possible double-up from third by Tim. If she did that because she thought Tim would play for the Triple Stumper, it might have been a better move to go smaller herself to pick up the win when James missed without having to be correct herself. Also, Diana’s bet would have left her one dollar short of James in the highly unlikely event he wagered $0.

Triple Stumper of the day: No one could identify the famous patriotic fife-and-drum painting as “The Spirit of ’76”.

Correct Qs: DD1 – What is Annapolis? DD2 – What is fleabag? DD3 – Who was Basquiat? FJ – What is Sears, Roebuck & Co.?
