The Tabletop Games Thread Talks About Trolls (1/14/26)

Welcome back to the weekly Tabletop Games thread! This thread is where we can talk about all kinds of RPGs, card games, board games, etc. Whether you gather around a physical table in the real world, or use a virtual space to play with friends who may live far away from you, this is where you can discuss your favorites, ask for and/or receive recommendations, recap your recent adventures, or even find some people to play games with!

Discussion Prompt: One of the classic D&D monsters is the humble Troll. Related to giants, these loathsome monsters are generally solitary and can be found in a wide variety of areas ranging from swamps and forests, to frozen tundra, to deep underground caves. Their defining feature in their ability to regenerate–unless their burned with fire or acid, even the most grievous of injuries will heal rapidly, even to the point of regrowing lost limbs or severed heads! Sometimes those severed limbs can also regrow into a whole new Troll!

At CR 5, the standard Troll can be a pretty good threat for a low-level adventuring party. But as the DM, you need to decide how much metagaming you’re willing to tolerate. Anyone who’s been playing the game long enough will know to bust our their fire spells as soon they recognize the monster–but does that mean that any in-universe character would have the same knowledge? Be prepared to make a ruling for your players if you want to spring a Troll on them.

What do you think about Trolls in D&D? And how do other fantasy adventure games treat them differently?

If you would like to suggest a prompt or contribute a write-up or discussion topic of your own, let me know in the comments!
