Jeopardy! recap for Mon., Sept. 8 (season premiere)

Here are today’s contestants:

Jeopardy!

EDIBLE IDIOMS // BUSINESS HISTORY // BIOLOGY // BICYCLES ON THE BIG SCREEN // PLAIN // SIMPLE

DD1 – $600 – BIOLOGY – “By Means of” this 2-word process was fit enough to survive as a subtitle for Darwin’s “Origin of Species” (Josh moved into second by doubling to $4,000.)

Scores at first break: Jonathan $1,800, Caroline $4,600, Josh $1,600.

Scores entering DJ: Jonathan $3,800, Caroline $5,600, Josh $4,400.

Double Jeopardy!

AFRICAN HISTORY // THAT ADDS UP // STREAMING TV // PLAYS & PLAYWRIGHTS // SAME FIRST & LAST LETTER // A PLATONIC CATEGORY

DD2 – $800 – AFRICAN HISTORY – 1896’s Battle of Adwa saw an Ethiopian army defeat an attempt by this European country to take control of it (Jonathan doubled to $21,200 vs. $7,600 for Caroline.)

DD3 – $1,200 – THAT ADDS UP – Barnard, Wellesley & 5 other schools banded together as these a century ago to address the need to fund women’s colleges (Jonathan added $3,000, improving to $25,800 vs. $6,000 for Caroline.)

Jonathan broke a close game wide open with a double-up from the lead on DD2, then he pretty much wrapped it up on DD3 and cruised into FJ at $29,800 vs. $7,200 for Caroline and $5,200 for Josh.

Final Jeopardy!

FAMOUS NAMES – On June 12, 1942 she wrote, “I hope I will be able to confide everything to you, as I have never been able to confide in anyone”

Jonathan and Josh were correct on FJ. Jonathan added $10,200 to win with $40,000 for a two-day total of $63,601.

Final scores: Jonathan $40,000, Caroline $6,200, Josh $5,626.

Triple Stumper of the day: The first one of the season came in the top row, when no one guessed the grocery store innovation for shoppers “who don’t feel like chatting” was self-checkout.

Wagering strategy: Another benefit of Jonathan’s big bet on DD2, beyond making it more likely for him to win, is that it gave him a bigger cushion in FJ, allowing him to bet more and win bigger.

Correct Qs: DD1 – What is natural selection? DD2 – What is Italy? DD3 – What is Seven Sisters? FJ – Who was Anne Frank?
