Hello Friends, HP here with a very, very last minute header for today.
It turns out that today is Amelia Earhart day! As a kid, I did a lot of my elementary school ‘biography reports’ and other projects on Amelia Earhart- I was fascinated by her. Being the tomboy that I was, I was drawn to her fearlessness and tenacity despite the sexism she faced. I admired her enthusiasm for travel and for pushing herself to the limits of her abilities; even as I got older, I’d still look for any articles or updates about her last flight, as they pop up now and then.
It turns out that a couple of Earhart related things came up recently:
A group of researchers have announced a new expedition to find her plane- she disappeared 88 years ago, on July 2, 1937
There is also a new book chronicling the complicated, fraught relationship Amelia Earhart had with her husband- it’s called ‘The Aviator and the Showman’:
Lastly, I’ve posted this song before, but one of my favorite albums from last year was a concept album by the very cool British band Public Service Broadcasting. It’s called ‘The Last Flight’, and it’s about Amelia Earhart’s last flight. It’s a wonderful listen, featuring the band’s really cool use of real broadcast recordings and excerpts from Amelia’s journals. It starts with the gorgeous ‘I was always dreaming’:
I hope you all have a good Thursday. Be good (it’s also International Self Care Day, so take the time!), be kind, and don’t go too far down the conspiracy spiral!
