Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! My love of shoujo manga and fashion have once again collided! Colleen’s latest video is a wonderful exploration of the relationship between fashion and shoujo manga.
I learned a lot while watching, and I of course found myself thinking about my shoujo fashion icons. I’ve written about my personal relationship to shoujo fashion before (with a focus on Sailor Moon), but if you don’t want to read that I’d quickly summarize it as…shoujo fashion means a lot to me because it helped me embrace how I wanted to dress without being afraid of being “too girly” — something I struggled with a lot in my younger days. Now my style has evolved to embrace both masculine and feminine styles, and I’ve found plenty of inspiration for that in shoujo manga as well! What about you all? Do you have any anime/manga fashion icons?
The header showcases some of my fashion icons.
I’ll list the series here!
