Comic Book Conversations: Recommendations

A part of the cover of the first issue of the DC comic "52." The text says "Week One. It Starts Here!"

It can be intimidating to start reading a particular character or franchise that’s been published for decades or maybe almost a century. Or a creator who interests you. Where should you start? With the best stories? With the earliest stories? What’s going to give you the foundation you need to keep reading? Luckily, your fellow Avocados have opinions! You just have to ask.

If someone asked me my favorite Spider-Man stories, I’d probably say Spectacular Spider-Man #178-200. But as great as those comics are, they’re a terrible place to start. Instead, I’d say start with Amazing Fantasy #15 and probably follow it up with Untold Tales of Spider-Man. But that’s just my opinion!

So here’s a place to ask for suggestions, make them and debate them.

Here’s how this will work: One person will name a character or title or franchise or creator. Then other people will suggest the best introductory story and maybe add the best ever story, what not to start with and what to avoid at all costs. You can also start a thread if you just want to get opinions, you don’t have to be in the market for a new character/creator.

By chance, I planned this before Cordyceps/TheSoSoGatsby published their Second Look on All-Star Superman which speaks to this same idea. Check it out if you haven’t already!

Previously on Thursdays on the Avocado, Mr. Steve Splendiferous would post his Comic Book Chats. But we haven’t seen Steve in a few months. I hope he’s well and knows he’s missed. In an attempt to fill the void, I plan to run these Comic Conversations every Thursday. Feel free to reach out with any suggestions or requests. Thanks!

Next week, we’ll talk about missed opportunities.
