The Avocado Movie Club #18: Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret (2023)

Welcome to the Movie Club! This week’s movie is Kelly Fremon Craig’s adaptation of Jude Blume’s iconic novel Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret!

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret stars Abby Ryder Forsten as the titular character, an eleven year old girl in 1970 whose life as she knows it is upended when her family moves from New York City to a suburb in New Jersey. Being upset with this dramatic change causes her to start talking to God, and her inner monologue to him becomes a throughline as she deals with the struggles of puberty, making new friends, religion, and many of the other struggles one has to deal with while growing up.

Despite the novel’s enduring popularity, Jude Blume consistently rejected offers to adapt it until she sold the film rights to Kelly Fremon Craig and the film’s producer, James L. Brooks. It was shot during 2021 but didn’t receive a wide release until April 28, 2023. It only made back $21.5 million against a budget of $30 million, making it a bit of a bomb, unfortunately1. The film was very warmly received by critics and audiences though, and currently has both a 99% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 94% from audiences2
