The Avocado Weekly Movie Thread (09/17)

Tom Cruise plays Capt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick from Paramount Pictures, Skydance and Jerry Bruckheimer Films.

I was wrong! These days I tend towards positivity when it comes to movies. I love celebrating things much more than tearing them down (I mean don’t get me wrong, I do criticize when I feel something is bad I just prefer to build up these days). I love seeing trailers or getting in on some buzz and finding new things to watch. But all that being said, I do tend to a certain amount of cynicism in life (ok a lot) and I often have knee jerk reactions to things like movie announcements, trailers etc. Things look bad sometimes. I mentioned The LEGO Movie from last week outwardly seemed like it was a two hour toy commercial but luckily I had a feeling on that one and it worked out.

Sometimes feelings are not there. Sometimes you see a trailer/announcement and it looks bad. Like a 20+ year sequel to a movie that seems to be just cashing in on nostalgia because that is the in thing now. Sometimes the follow-up marketing and such is just as bad, that not only was this a sequel based solely on nostalgia but it seems like they are just doing the exact same plot as the first movie, but updated for a modern audience. This was my reaction to Top Gun: Maverick last year. I was convinced it was going to be a complete waste of my time and wasn’t worth watching in theatres. And then person after person, friend after friend came out talking about how great it was, non stop thrill ride and the like. So I swallowed by movie sense, pride and all else and went to see it in theatres and I am proud to admit I was wrong on that one (I mean partially wrong, it was largely the same movie but with super extra cashing in on nostalgia and cult level Goose worship). It was a super thrilling ride and totally meant to be seen in theatre on a big fun screen*!

Which leads me to today’s prompt: What movie were you wrong about? Did you initially dismiss or think it would be bad but instead you ended up really enjoying?

*The Epilogue for this one was we saw Top Gun: Maverick on ScreenX which means during high action sequences they stretch the image out so it is happening on the sides of you as well as in front. This is meant to simulate action happening all around you but I found it just made things harder to watch with no discernable benefit, I do not recommend. However I still enjoyed this movie despite it being shown in a format I did not overly appreciate so that is a testament to it’s good qualities.
