As mentioned last week, I love movies. When it comes to movies possibly the only thing I love more than seeking out and watching fun, interesting, new, terrible, and pretty much any movie is sharing my love of movies with others. Friends, family, random internet strangers, co-workers and so on have all felt my overzealous desire for cinema. I always said if I had a super power it was to suggest movies for people to watch based on ones I know they liked (usually I need minimum three movies to use as a reference point).
There is great joy in playing film match maker. When you get to see someone experience the joy you felt for the first time, or maybe you get to witness a great AHA! moment during a plot twist you knew was coming. Did you ever feel the pure awesomeness when someone returns a DVD says “that was great, what else do you have?” Shared joy of media consumption not only provides 2ish hours of entertainment, but also all the time you can now spend talking about these movies, that is priceless.
This is however a double edge sword sometimes. The devastation you feel when they do not like what you had previously considered a sure thing. At this point you may have to reconsider long term friend planning, or even possibly divorce (luckily Mrs. Fistcrush came around on Black Dynamite). I have a friend who I have given several recommendations to, and now when he sits down with his girlfriend to watch a movie it only has to pass one test: “Did Brick recommend this movie?” (and full disclosure if the answer to that question is yes, then they watch something else).
All things good and bad considered, this week’s prompt: What is the movie(s) do you love recommending most for people to see? Is there one above the rest, or is it situational? Do you totally geek out over things or play it cool and understated?
