Disney’s Tarzan opened on this day 25 years ago. Following a string of animated features that hadn’t quite delivered at the box office like the studio hoped, Tarzan was a return to blockbuster form, a critical and commercial smash that was the Mouse House’s biggest hit since The Lion King. What else is there to really say? Tarzan rocks, with amazing animation, jaw-dropping action, and an iconic Phil Collins soundtrack. It’s awesome stuff.
Now, I’ll have more about Disney’s Tarzan (or at least its marketing campaign) in the night thread, but for now, let’s talk about something more…naughty. A very naughty song that kids listened to! “Tarzan and Jane” is a ballad from the Danish pop group Toy-Box. Although initially released in 1998, it was reissued in 1999 to coincide with the animated movie, and was an enormous success, landing the #15 slot on the Eurochart Hot 100. It was also, as I just noted, extremely popular with children. Those parents just weren’t listening to the CDs they bought their offspring in the 90s. Hell, maybe they even thought this was an official Disney tie-in! In any case, the song is filled with innuendo humor (I mean, this was from the Austin Powers era of comedy, so go figure), and honestly, it’s a real bop. Like, I dare you not to enjoy this thing! You might not want to love it, but you absolutely will (then again, it has more than 32 million views, so you’ve probably already heard it). Sorry.
Have a SWINGING day, y’all!
