30 day Star Trek/Wars challenge day 18: Retcons, revisionism and memoryholing

Welcome to the 30 day challenge of May, which sees a return to two of the most iconic things in pop culture, to say nothing of Science Fiction, namely Star Trek and Star Wars. Throughout this month some prompts will be general and apply to both franchises, while others will be Trek/Wars specific, as indicated.

In series as old as these, managing what is canon or not can be an extensive process. Sometimes, older plotlines are heavily recontextualized through later writing choices, sometimes new editions can literally change past events, and sometimes certain plot beats are simply abandoned, left dangling in the wind.

To start with, what are the most and least effective retcons of the Star Wars and Trek brands?

Bonus prompt: Maclunkey award for Best and worst of the revisions of the Star Wars special editions, and beyond

Extra Bonus prompt: What forgotten plotpoint Trek/Wars should be picked up again?

Kelvin Legends Bonus prompt: What writing choice should get binned, and not pursued further?

Legends of Kelvin Bonus prompt: How strict/flexible should the continuity ideally be for these franchises?
