Optional discussion Prompt: Languages

There are many real world languages besides English and an infinite number in the worlds we create. Since most of us write in English, and our readers read in English, how do we handle it when our characters meet people who do not speak English?

Obviously the extreme example is to create an entirely new language, like Elvish or Klingon, and the extreme in the other direction is to just have everyone speak the same language, because surprise! this Klingon studied English in school and is as fluent as the Earthlings they are speaking to. There are many other examples in between these.

How do you handle languages in your writing? Does everyone speak “Common?” Is there a Universal Translator or a Babel Fish? Or do you just stay close to home and not encounter other languages?

Or talk about whatever!
