Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (February 28, 2024)

Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! My love and deep respect for shoujosei manga is no secret around here, so it shouldn’t be surprising that I spend a lot of time thinking about the history and culture of these works. I am always eager to learn more about this subject, and I’m just as eager to share what I learn with everyone I know. And that includes all of you, of course! Today, I want to share Colleen’s Manga Recs‘ latest video on shoujo manga. This is a new and improved version of one of their earliest videos that expands on the history of shoujo while also providing a very useful explanation of its defining features. It was really interesting to learn about the birth of this manga demographic along with how it has evolved over the years, and I feel like I have an even deeper understanding and appreciation for the world of shoujo manga now.

But my favorite thing about this video might actually be what comes after the history. Around the 43 minute mark, Colleen digs more into the lack of respect for shoujo manga, providing their own explanation for why these works are so important, what makes them special, and why this demographic matters. I’ve watched this video a few times now, but I still find myself tearing up each time as I listen to them expressing exactly how I feel about the invaluable space that shoujo manga has created for me. It is very reassuring to hear someone speak with authority and confidence about the need for these kinds of stories because it makes me feel like I’m not alone in this belief. If you’re interested in learning more about the past, present, and future of shoujo manga, I highly recommend you give this video a watch.

If your time is limited, and you’re mostly interested in an explanation of what shoujo manga is and why it matters, you could start here. But I really recommend the whole video because the history lesson was fascinating and provided a lot of important context that helped me better understand the current state of the demographic. Of course, I’d also be more than happy to discuss this subject with you in the comments!

And, as always…

What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?

Happy Wednesday! 🙂
