The Weekly Music Discussion Thread Hits the Skip Button

Let’s discuss any and all music here. You’ve got a new artist who’s rocking your boat that you want to talk about? Post a video! Found out about that unearthed Coltrane album that has the jazz freak in you losing your mind? Lay it out for us! Do you have a theory about what your favorite band might do for their next album? Let’s hear it! Anything and everything music-related goes here.

Last week I was listening to Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ Greatest Hits (are for housewives and little girls, I’m well aware) in the car. A thoroughly kick-ass compilation, and since “classic rock radio” isn’t anywhere near as ubiquitous in Japan as it is in Canada, I seldom hear any Tom Petty unless I put it on myself. A thoroughly kick-ass compilation…EXCEPT I can’t freaking stand “Don’t Do Me Like That”. I know it was a huge hit and remains one of his more popular songs (it’s on the Greatest Hits CD, duh) but for whatever reason it just annoys the hell out of me, so I skip it every single time.

A slightly different case is “The Murder Mystery” from the Velvet Underground’s eponymous third album. I actually appreciate that track and enjoy listening to it – when I’m in the mood for it. Problem is, when I’m in the mood to listen to the third VU album, I’m usually not in the mood for “The Murder Mystery”. Back when I had a car with a tape deck but not many tapes, I recorded the eponymous third and Loaded onto a 90-minute cassette, sticking a few extra contemporaneous tracks from the Peel Slowly & See box set onto the ends of both sides to fill up the tape. But I left off “The Murder Mystery” because I figured I’d end up fast-forwarding through it most of the time – and I was also positive that, much fun as I had fiddling with the balance on the stereo speakers at home and taking in various parts of the narrative, if I did try listening to it while driving I’d probably end up crashing my car (for similar reasons, Trout Mask Replica, which is one of my favorite albums of all time, has never spent longer than 30 seconds in the stereo of a car that I have been driving).

Which leads us to this week’s discussion prompt: What are some albums you really like…BUT there is still a track or two that you skip nearly every time? Is it because you genuinely dislike the song, or has it just been played to death? Is it a song you have to be in a specific mood or frame of mind to appreciate? Let us know down below!

Should’ve put this (or just about anything else by the late, great Tom Petty) on that Greatest Hits CD instead the song I mentioned up above. Oh, well – that’s what the skip button exists for. Plus, it’s a helluva lot easier than fast-forwarding, eh?

So have fun and as always, rock out with yr guac out!
