Hey Avocadonites , Kevzero here, welcome to Bootleg Corner. A post dedicated to the semi-authorized records. Throughout the years I’ve amassed a rather large collection of bootleg CDs, vinyl, downloads, even the occasional cassette; from live recordings to outtake sessions. So I’ve decided to create a space here to occasionally review some them for you, and a place for other fans of Recordings Of Indiscriminate oRigin(RIORs) to gather together.

Overview:
The Rolling Stones get psychedelic with their most polarizing album of the 60’s. These discs are part of a comprehensive 4 volume, broken up in to four discs each, box set of the Their Satanic Majesties Request sessions. I’m going to showcase each here broken up by their individual discs
Performance: A
I sure some may disagree, but I think the Stones’ brief psychedelic period is great. Both Nicky Hopkins and Brian Jones shine in these sessions.
Recording: A-
There’s a few obvious recording problems, most of which are more noticeable on the later volumes, but these sound almost as good as the finished album.
Highlights:
She’s A Rainbow and Citadel are the stand out tracks here. Without any vocals you can appreciate the instrumental arraignments of the songs
2000 Light Years From Home without vocals or a lot of the psychedelic effects of the finished song, comes across as a more traditional rock song
Nicky Hopkins! His keyboard work on We Love You, In Another Land, and, She’s A Rainbow is amazing and really stands out here.
Lowlights:
Where’s Mick? This entire set, excluding some studio chatter, is almost exclusively instrumental. That’s not bad per se, but it would’ve been nice to hear some of Mick’s vocal outtakes. This is true for a lot of Rolling Stones’ sessions bootlegs
As par for comprehensive session bootlegs, a lot of the takes are more or less the same
Recommended… Yes, if you’re a fan of the Stones, or of psychedelic music this is a highly recommended bootleg companion piece; either as a set or the discs individually. However, giving the polarizing nature of Their Satanic Majesties Request if you not a fan, I doubt this set will convert you otherwise
