Watchin’ TV w/ Admirax Night Thread, Channel One

The only open thread I ever did on the old site was a very thorough biography of Hans Conried which included so many videos and pictures that I’m pretty sure I broke the entirety of Disqus, not just our channel. I promise not to do that in this thread, or in future threads, but the hell with you if you think I’m gonna stop talking about entertainers from the 40’s, 50’s, and 60’s. So let’s get on with it!

The Del Rubio Triplets were a novelty act of singing blonde triplets. They had some small success in the fifties, appearing on several Bob Hope programs, but didn’t achieve true stardom until the eighties, when the sisters were sixty-four years old. They enjoyed covering contemporary pop and rock songs, including hits like “Neutron Dance” (which, if you’re a fan of The Golden Girls, you may have seen them perform!)

Professional party host Allee Willis caught wise to the Del Rubio’s act, and began inviting them to perform at her parties. They were an instant hit with party attendees, many of whom were Hollywood big wigs. Soon they were booking guest spots on hit television series of the era, including Married…With Children, Full House, Night Court, and, to this writer’s delight, the Pee-Wee’s Playhouse Christmas Special.

The Del Rubio Triplets seemed to simply delight in the act of performance, and would often play gigs just for the money it took to get them to the venue. Because they embraced high camp, big hair, leggy outfits, and themselves, they became minor icons of the LGBTQ community of the late 80’s/early 90’s.

All three have since passed away, and are interred next to their father in Culver City, California.

Anyhow, please look these ladies up – they’ve got a multitude of delightful performances on YouTube. As for me, well – I’m gonna share with you my very first introduction to them. And it’s seasonal, too! Happy Holidays to all you blonde triplets out there.
