30 Days Of Horror Challenge Day 29: Your Favorite Non-Traditional Creature

I’m trying to figure out how to word this properly and this is very much coming from an American-centric perspective, so forgive me there. While most of us grew up with the “traditional” creatures of darkness with vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the like, there are a lot more things that go bump in the night out there. And they get almost no play in Hollywood and media spawned from there unless it’s super popular and gets adapted, with things like Ringu.

So, what we want to know is what creatures are the ones that provide the best horror bite that aren’t from within that traditional grouping, the Universal Pictures Monsters and all.

I’ve spent most of my adult life immersed in Japanese works and their folklore and mythology so there is a whole lot there that gives me the willies. While they tend to cute-ify a whole lot of it for various properties, it’s all based on some solid horror tales. There are plenty of variants to it but the Yuki-onna tales are ones that tend to get me since I grew up and live in a cold climate and the fear of something out in the darkness of the night in the cold with all that snow is extra chilling to me.

Bonus Question: Which one from this range of creatures do you wish would get the big worldwide style media push to be recognized alongside the likes of Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster, and the Mummy?
