February TV Preview – Streaming (I Might Not Believe That Hulu’s Dystopian Teen Hip Hop Show Exists)

I waited patiently and as of this draft, there is still no trailer for Utopia Falls that I can find. Bring forth the trailer! Let me see the words, “And Snoop Dogg as The Archive” flash across my screen.

Hulu

High Fidelity

A reimagining of Nick Hornby’s 1995 novel, the series centers on Rob Brooks, a female record store owner in the rapidly gentrified neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn who revisits past relationships through music and pop culture, while trying to get over her one true love.

Starring: Zoë Kravitz, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, David H. Holmes, Jake Lacy, Kingsley Ben-Adir

Quick Thoughts: Zoë Kravitz as Rob is pretty inspired casting for a lot of reasons. And I’m up for anything that gives more work to Kingsley Ben-Adir, our super hot, psychic octopus shooting private eye. Ah, Old Night. May you rest peacefully in the psychic octopus afterlife.

Premieres February 14th

Utopia Falls

Hundreds of years in the future, in the last living colony on earth, a city called New Babyl, twenty-four teenage candidates are chosen to take part in an annual musical competition known as The Exemplar. For all of them it’s a chance to write their names in the history books, but for Aliyah, the independent and adventurous daughter to a city government official, it’s the beginning of an incredible adventure. Through the discovery of a mysterious archive, she is exposed to hip-hop, an ancient form of music culture, which will lead her to question everything she has ever known and change her world forever.

The journey to unravel that mystery will play out over the course of the first season while our candidates prepare and participate in The Exemplar competition. Channeling the rebellious spirit of Hip-hop, Aliyah and her friends face off against the government for the freedom of the people in a finale that will rock the very foundation of their society, changing all of their lives forever.

Starring: Robyn Alomar, Akiel Julien, Robbie Graham-Kuntz, Phillip Lewitski, Humberly Gonzalez, Devyn Nekoda, Mickey Nguyen, Kate Drummond, Jeff Teravainen, Huse Madhavji, Dwain Murphy, Snoop Dogg

Quick Thought: Hehehehehehe whatthefuck? I want to see this so bad. If this is not bonkers then I’ll be severely disappointed. The dates for this show have disappeared from the Hulu press site so there’s a possibility that it won’t even air in February.

Also this from the guy who made Dark Matter. I love that show. I’m not sure how he leapt from Not Quite Firefly to Canadian Hunger Games But Hip Hop though.

Starring: Al Pacino, Logan Lerman, Jerrika Hinton, Kate Mulvany, Tiffany Boone, Carol Kane, Saul Rubinek, Josh Radnor, Louis Ozawa Changchien, Greg Austen, Dylan Baker, Lena Olin

Quick Thoughts: I WANT TO SEE AL PACINO AND TED MOSBY HUNT NAZIS. AL PACINO STABBING WALTER BISHOP IN THE HAND. CAROLE KANE BLOWING SHIT UP! EVIL LENA OLIN! Just…Lena Olin.

Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet

Meet the team behind the biggest multiplayer video game of all-time. They’re tasked with building worlds, molding heroes and creating legends, but the most hard-fought battles don’t occur in the game — they happen in the office.

Starring: Rob McElhenney, F. Murray Abraham, Imani Hakim, David Hornsby, Danny Pudi, Ashly Burch, Charlotte Nicdao, Jessie Ennis

Quick Thoughts: I remember them announcing this at E3 and all of us in the thread being like, “THIS ISN’T A VIDEO GAME. BURN THEM.” But with hindsight and the virtue of not being all hyped up by the dancing Ubisoft Panda, this looks super cool. I would watch a show by Rob McElhenney and Megan Ganz about Salieri, Abed, and Ash from Hey Ash, Watcha’ Playin’? doing tax law. So having them make a show about something I’m actually interested in is really exciting.

Premieres February 7th

Visible: Out On Television

Explore the history of the American LGBTQ movement through the lens of TV in this five-part docuseries. Combining archival footage with new interviews, the series looks at homophobia, the evolution of LGBTQ characters, and coming out in the TV world.

Starring: Lena Waithe, Janet Mock, Asia Kate Dillon, Margaret Cho, Neil Patrick Harris, Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Anderson Cooper, Billy Porter, Rachel Maddow, Don Lemon, Sara Ramirez, Wilson Cruz, Jane Alexander, Hal Holbrook, Jonathan Groff, Holland Taylor, Sean Hayes, Winnie Holzman, George Takei, T.R. Knight, Conrad Ricamora, Greg Berlanti, Wanda Sykes

Quick Thoughts: They had me completely when they showed the double proposal from Sense8. I remember crying when they brought back that show for a final episode because I realized I would get to see Nomi and Amanita get married.

I do find it interesting that the decline of Glee‘s quality and reputation means that it doesn’t even make the trailer. Whatever we think of that show now, it is kind of a huge step in Queer history in television. Genuinely happy to see Mr. Ratburn there though.

They’ve Gotta Have Us

Created by photographer and artist Simon Frederick, the three-part documentary series explores the history of Black cinema through in-depth interviews with black actors, directors, and creators across three generations.

Starring: Harry Belafonte, David Oyelowo, Barry Jenkins, Nathalie Emmanuel, Debbie Allen, Diahann Carrol, Debbie Allen, Jesse Williams, John Boyega, John Singleton, Ernest R. Dickerson, Laurence Fishburne, Boots Riley

Quick Thoughts: Do you ever think about how if they had run Viola Davis in the Best Actress category instead of supporting that La La Land/Moonlight thing would never have happened? That kind of ran through my head when they were showing all the Black actors who won Best Supporting Actor/Actress. That and how Halle Berry is only Black woman to win Best Actress. I keep thinking about her speech and how she talked about her win opening doors. And she has but Hollywood still likes to shunt those performances to a supporting category even when they are clearly leads. Anyway, my brain is rambling. This doc looks interesting and has Ava Duvernay’s seal of approval. I’m excited for it.

Also I love you Nathalie Emmanuel and I hope Justin Lin actually gives Ramsay something to do in fnine.

Premieres February 5th

With no distractions from the outside world, the singles talk to a stream of potential love interests and when a meaningful connection is made, they propose and then lay their eyes on their fiancé for the first time. Engaged and back in the real world, as the couples plan their wedding day, they will quickly discover whether they can turn their emotional connection into a physical one before the fast-approaching ceremony. this addictive 10-part series will uncover whether looks or age do matter, or if love really is blind.

Starring: Nick Lachey, Vanessa Lachey

Quick Thoughts: There’s a show like this on cable where “experts” pair people based off “compatibility” and they meet at the altar. They paired two people together because they were both very hot and then she had to get a restraining order against him.

Hello, Lacheys. Nice to see you again.

Premieres: February 13th

Gentefied

But most importantly, Gentefied will settle once and for all how to pronounce Latinx.
