August 24th Pays it No Mind

In 1945, the same year my father was born, Marsha P. Johnson was born as well.  A black trans woman who may or may not have been the first to attack the police at Stonewall (others who were there claim she was; she herself much later said she wasn’t there at the time, and only showed up later), she nonetheless was a major figure in the LGBTQ liberation movement along with Sylvia Rivera.

She was very likely murdered in 1992; while it was initially ruled a suicide, she had been the victim of violence multiple times before, and those who knew her protested the idea that she had killed herself.   The truth is still not known, though the investigation was re-opened in 2012.  There is a documentary about her on Netflix, for those interested in learning more.
