The ancient Picts of Scotland left behind very few traces of their culture, except for the carved standing stones they erected all across the country. There are around 350 known stones, many adorned with carved symbols, sometimes abstract, sometimes of recognisable animals like snakes, eagles, and wolves. And then there’s the Pictish Beast.

Something that looks like a hybrid between a horse and a dolphin, no one is really sure what the carving is supposed to represent. However, the Pictish Beast accounts for 40% of all the depictions of animals carved into the stones, so it was obviously a creature of great importance to them.
